I am the quiet one.
Mouth hanging open because
I can’t believe all of the hype
I am the quiet one

I don’t know what to say anymore
I don’t have the answers
and I’m too scared to speak
if I did.

Uncle Sam turns a blind eye and turns a deaf ear
and talks out the side of his neck and
ignores the train wreck all around him.

I want to put my fist through the TV tonight
flipping channel after channel and seeing
hate fill the streets with blood of black boys and no one is allowed to be angry

No matter if you’re black
No matter if you’re white

you aren’t allowed to be angry because Uncle Sam has your back, and
never mind if his hand is holding
a dagger there.

It’s chaos and anger, everywhere.

I don’t loudly defend and I sit on my hands because another mom
lost her child and what if that was me?
All I can see is anguish.

and I think we are born with a sense of right and wrong
So where did it go…I don’t understand why anguish is all the rage
in this day and age

I thought we were supposed to evolve
Knees bloody from praying and the only thing solved is…what? Nothing.
Let’s pretend life’s great
and let’s slip on our human skin, whatever shade it is,
and never mind the inner layer of hate simmering beneath.

I want to scream so loud and scare the world into silence
there’s no way to explain to my babies how violence is nurtured more closely than I nurture them

I want to give up because I lost the race.
I lost faith because we all lost the race.
We all lost faith in the human race.
