My First Taste of Bizarro

Murder Stories for your Brain PieceMurder Stories for your Brain Piece by Kevin Strange
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I like stories. No…strike that. I love stories. Some of my favorite people in the whole world have a story to tell, or a dozen stories – or a never ending supply, and the result for me is this: when I read a story, and live it through the eyes of the author, it changes me. I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but I rather like this effect, and so I read, a lot – as much as I can, as often as I can.

When I was gifted the book Murder Stories for Your Brain Piece, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had never read anything remotely Bizarro and to be perfectly blunt, I read this entire book with my mouth hanging open.

Each short story is crafted with a deliberate bluntness, completely unapologetic, and definitely not for the faint of heart. I think, once the shock had worn down just a little, I was absolutely delighted to read stories that took ideas like heartbreak, depravity, zombies, aliens, myths, and sex and stomped those ideas into the dirt, ground them around a little…dusted them off and presented them in a perfect combination of off-the-cuff and in-your-face.

My favorite story is I Killed Jessica, Again – this being because of the sheer believability of the entire story, right up to the point of other-worldly events, and then even past that a little. Because Kevin Strange included notes at the end of this book on the origins of each story, it is apparent where the believability factor comes in; after all, the most primal and basic roots of this tale are submerged in actual events, and it bleeds through with vivid, uncomfortable clarity.

I recommend this book if you enjoy a good shock, or if you need your literary frame of mind shaken up completely, or if you need inspiration to continue on in any aspect of your life despite the BS you may be dealing with. I think I just became a fan of the Bizarro genre.
